Summer is peak butterfly season with warm, sunny weather that sends colorful creatures fluttering through our gardens.
Why not take a closer look at them? Let’s grab a lawn chair, a mojito and your favorite cotton-linen blend, and start knitting a summer tee brimming with butterflies.

“Motyle” (Polish for butterflies) is a simple summer tee with an elegant twist. It is knit seamlessly from the top down with short-row neckline and shoulder shaping. Plenty of increases on both front and back make for a smooth, pucker-free transition between the butterfly shoulder strip and the main part of the garment.
The tee got its name from the intricate butterfly-shaped lace pattern featured on the shoulder bands, with a matching detail at the bottom of the front. Hem and sleeve edges are worked in double knitting for reinforcement and to prevent the fabric from rolling.

This loose-fitting seamless sweater, worked top down with unconventional overlong trumpet sleeves, is your canvas to play with colors.

With the stitch pattern, born out of improvising with increases, I came up when I wanted to create something more intricate, with a unique color scheme and an interesting texture that would appeal to the wild girl in every knitter, too.

Here, you can turn the general idea and technical recommendations for blending colorways into your very own color adventure in knit. Detailed fading instructions are included on page 4 of the pattern. It is up to you to decide whether you’d like to work this garment in one color, emphasizing the texture of the pretty twisted ribbing lines, or from the minimum of three to as many colors as you like from your riotous remnant basket.

If you like circular yoke sweaters, but don’t care much about the good-girl look usually associated with garments constructed in this manner, try this one for a change: “Yokester” is a seamless sweater worked from the top down with a circular yoke, featuring a wide neckline, contemporary large-holed lace pattern on the yoke and asymmetrical ribbing at the hem – certainly not your run-of-the-mill pullover! It comes with two sleeve length options and optional fading instructions if using hand-dyed yarn. “Rippling Around” is a long-sleeved sweater with circular yoke, worked seamlessly from the top down. The textured and openwork stitch patterns on the yoke, the asymmetrical ribbing at the hem, and last but not least the color, remind of water sloshing around in a washbasin.

“Laceback” is a loose-fitting summer top worked from the top down. Elegant lace panels in a leafy vine pattern decorate the back and extend onto both sleeves, which are worked in a modified raglan construction and feature different shaping for front and back.

Eyelets are added to the sleeves and at the sides just for fun, but can be threaded with your choice of i-cord or satin ribbon for a different look, making this top a versatile garment for many occasions with just the right amount of feminine touch.

Black Coast is a seamless sweater with a pretty lace pattern, worked seamlessly from the top down in a slight A-line shape. The front is worked first, with short-row shaping for the neckline, followed by the back to the underarm, where pieces are joined and continued in the round down to the hem.

“Backtracked” is a seamless cardigan worked from the top down using a special raglan construction, where raglan increases at the back are cleverly hidden in wide zigzag pattern bands reminiscent of tire tracks. The wide zigzag strips continue towards and over the sleeves down to the cuffs, while narrow zigzag bands mark the imagined side seams. The shawl collar is worked last from stitches picked up along the fronts and from the back neckline. Collar, hem and sleeve cuffs are worked partially in double knit, partially with a slip stitch pattern.

„Di” triangular shawl is worked from the tip to the widest edge in a brioche pattern in combination with garter stitch. Increases are made at the edges, and short row shaping is added towards the wide end to achieve an overall more pleasing shape.

“Eyeletta” is a loosely fitting everyday sweater with a stretching eyelet pattern down the front and back. Worked top down seamlessly, with neckline and bottom shaping featuring German short rows, it requires almost no finishing at all, except for weaving in ends and an optional slight blocking to open up the eyelet columns. Perfect for first-time lace knitters with basic garment experience!

Shown in our very own Dye-Dye-Done wool/nylon blends, colorways “Smitten Kitten” and “Pink on Fire” demonstrate how different looks can be achieved just with color. Shelldone is a triangular shawl knit from side to side on the bias in one piece. Its classic and clean look is broken up by series of lace sections with a shell-like stitch pattern, making this shawl interesting to knit and to wear. Especially cozy when knit from a very soft and delicate yarn such as the one used for the pictured sample shawl!

Goddess Jūratė (from the noun jūra meaning the sea) lived under the Baltic Sea in a beautiful amber castle. She ruled the sea and all of the sea-life. A young fisherman named Kastytis was disturbing the peace as he was catching a lot of fish. Jūratė decided to punish him and restore the peace, but she fell in love with the handsome young fisherman. They spent some happy times in the castle, but Perkūnas, the thunder-god, found out that the immortal goddess had fallen in love with a mortal man. He became furious and struck the amber castle. It exploded into millions of pieces. Then Jūratė was chained to either the ruins or a rock on the seafloor by Perkūnas. According to legend, that is why pieces of amber come ashore after a storm on the Baltic Sea. (Wikipedia)

Jurata is a top-down shawl with asymmetrical short row shaping. The lively patterned Japanese style lace border with eyelet/picot edging is knitted on after the body has been finished. If you like to experiment with colors by knitting a sweater, and ordinary fading is not enough for you, it is also worth to try marling.
Marling is one of the easiest methods of colored knitting – all you have to do is connect two strands of yarn in different colors. However, if at the same time each one of the yarns is of a different fiber blend and structure, and you change every few rows to a new color, you can get a unique piece of knitwear with exclusive colors.
This is the method I used in the “Almandite” sweater.
“Almandite” is a classic and elegant open front cardigan knitted from the top to the bottom in one piece with two strands in different colors held together. To achieve smooth transitions and extraordinary colors, the strands are separated in the indicated places and replaced with new colors. An additional effect is added by an interesting textured pattern, complemented by a wide collar knitted in garter stitch.

After having made “Naturally Yours” last year in collaboration with De Rerum Natura, I decided to revisit this lovely and versatile yarn and design another open front cardigan (…my favorite type of sweater!).
“Crossing over” is worked top down and seamless (…my favorite construction method for sweaters!), starting from the wide collar, followed by the yoke and the body.
The back in an easy to knit half brioche stitch pattern features an interesting shaping detail based on an updated version of the shaping used in my “Wien” pullover, with a larger backcrossing that moves first “up” and then “down”, where in “Wien” it meandered only in one direction.

A while ago I had been contacted by Kim Goodling, the owner of The Gotland Wool Company, who raises Gotland sheep in the U.S. and sells her yarns online and at festivals. Kim, who liked my garments combining lacework and Stockinette, wanted a pattern for a short pullover, cardigan, or vest that would show off the qualities of her wonderful yarn with emphasis on maximum yarn usage, since with this type of high-end yarn, overall project cost is often a concern.

Having never worked with Gotland yarn before, I was very curious to learn how it would knit up and what would look best to showcase its advantages. I found it to be a truly beautiful yarn that didn’t want to be spoiled by overloading it with features or drowning out its structure!

We agreed that from the colors Kim picked, I would design a cardigan in two lengths to give knitters an option of deciding on the overall yarn amount used: regular and cropped; as well as with a short and long sleeve version.

Vermont is a classic top-down raglan sweater knit seamlessly with textured lace back. The pattern contains four styling options: cropped, regular, short sleeve, and long sleeve.

“Vermont” was designed in collaboration with The Gotland Wool Company.

„Cordial Embraces” is a crescent shaped shawl with clipped corners, worked from side to side in one piece. Its wide border in Japanese lace style with a traditional leaf garland pattern is worked together with the reverse stockinette stitch body and included both charted and as written-out row-by-row description. Short row shaping creates a slight curvature so the shawl stays put.

“Puch” (Polish for the very soft fluff of very small feathers) is a slightly cropped top-down sweater with a loose fit, worked seamlessly with a circular yoke. For a special dual color effect, the garment is knit with two strands of yarn held together: mohair and an alpaca-linen blend. In the yoke part, both strands are worked up separately to create a two-layered fabric, a base layer in alpaca-linen blend in stockinette, and a decorative top layer in mohair worked in a lace pattern with large openings.

The pattern provides two sleeve versions to choose from: regular and balloon sleeves.

This sweater will look nice paired with an elegant sparkly skirt in any length.

“Naturally Yours” is worked seamlessly top-down from the collar to the hem in raglan construction with accented raglan lines, asymmetric sleeve cables and A-line shaped fronts that overlap at the bottom. Short rows slightly elongate the rounded back in comparison to the fronts, creating just the right “natural shape” for a comfortable fit. Waist shaping on the back is already accounted for in the cable panel, which is fully charted and written out at the same time. The idea for this garment had been in my head for quite some time until it had matured to perfection. Since its classic shape and sophisticated design details, such as bottom ribbing and button band in sync with the back pattern rhythm and button spacing, also look timeless enough to fit in with any period style, I thought “From Way Back” was just the right name for it!

The cardigan is worked top-down – of course, as usual, seamless – and, despite its intricate looks, not at all complicated to knit. The lace pattern repeat is fully written out and charted at the same time, and raglan increases are charted for the full range of sizes as well.

Whether planned with zero ease, or with just enough of negative ease to fit snugly, this cardigan goes well with everything from jeans to various dress styles. “Aguo” is a crescent-shaped shawl knit from side to side in one piece, featuring a stockinette stitch body interspersed with garter stitch ridges.

This cardigan evolved after I had published my “Get the Picture” hat featuring the same stitch, resulting in a lot of inquiries for sweaters from people who were fond of the stitch pattern (as far as I remember, I think I must have found this stitch pattern on one of those free-stitch-pattern-websites, but I am not 100% sure any more). Subsequently, I decided to make one for myself to see how this would work out.

I wanted it to be a simple, classic open cardigan with raglan sleeves and pockets hidden within the hem - something comfortable and wearable made from beautiful yarn, the kind of sweater you can slip into when you go for a walk in the park with your kids - but at the same time, unique enough so you won’t be lost in the crowd if the kids come looking for you.

And that was how the adult sized “Petrichor” came to life.
This cardigan is knit top down, absolutely seamlessly (even the pockets are joined to the hem as you work them up), with extra waist shaping on the back.
To make it easier to knit, all raglan increases are charted for all sizes.

Girly Pink Spring is a girly version of adult Spring is Pink cardigan.
It is a classically shaped cardigan knit seamlessly from the top down with simultaneously set in sleeves.

As with most of my cardigans, Girly Pink Spring is knit top down, completely seamlessly with set in sleeves knitted simultaneously with the body. First, you knit a few rows of the back, then carefully pick up the provisional cast on stitches at the shoulders and work a few rows of each front. At that point you pick up stitches along the tops of the armholes, and then join all pieces together to work the front, sleeves, and back simultaneously. The armholes are shaped with increases as you continue knitting down. All the upper sections are worked simultaneously until it is time to separate the sleeves stitches from the body, then you work body and sleeves independently.

“Shelliana” is an asymmetrical triangular shawl worked on the bias in a shell-like pattern inspired by entrelac and brioche, but created entirely with twisted stitches.
Started by casting on 5 stitches at the tip of the triangle, it gains width through increases and additional pattern repeats, with occasional short rows cleverly hidden in the textured pattern, which introduce a slight curvature in the top edge of the triangle for a convenient shape that stays safely put on the shoulders.
With its stitch pattern flowing along in soft waves, it complements a variety of outfit styles from casual to festive, and can be paired with jeans as well as skirts and dresses.

This yarn by Filcolana and its interesting color appealed instantly to me, even though the color, a deep reddish Russet, is way off from the usual suspects in my range of favorite tones.

This roomy sweater in an oversize look with lots of positive ease is worked seamlessly from the top down, neckline and shoulders are shaped with German short rows. “Quicksand” is a triangular shawl worked sideways, starting at one of the tips. Shaped with increases hidden in the side cable, it features an intriguing cable pattern meandering through brioche pockets, and is topped off with an i-cord bind-off at the widest part. I spotted this interesting stitch pattern on a Polish knitting website and decided to adapt it for the shawl shape.

PS: Contrary to popular perception based mainly on 1960’s movie culture, it is not physically possible for a person to sink entirely into quicksand – no danger immersing yourself in this cozy shawl!

“Cantata” Pullover, created in collaboration with Walcot yarns, is knit top-down in the round entirely seamless. The pictured sample was knit in Walcot Yarns Opus (70% Merino, 30% Alpaca): 100g/ 384 yards {350 meters}, a merino-alpaca blend that is pleasing to work with and brings out the best in the stitch pattern.

Specially designed with modified circular yoke construction to have a lowered yoke and wider neckline, this sweater has a slightly cropped overall length and long sleeves with moderate balloon shaping in the lower part. It features a textured overall stitch pattern of vertical lines, broken by short horizontal welts in rhythmic intervals, which had been inspired by the photo of a ready-to wear garment spotted on a Pinterest board.

The pullover is completely worked inside out to avoid purling too many stitches. A helpful video tutorial explains the special technique used to create the decorative welts sitting like notes on staff lines in music.

The pattern provides complete row-by-row instructions for 9 sizes, a separate stitch pattern chart for those who prefer to work visually, as well as the customary schematics with marker placement.

Laid-back without looking sloppy, this is a sweater for relaxed moments in an otherwise structured life – wear it around campus, in front of the fireplace at a cozy mountain cabin, or just for a coffee shop run into town on a Saturday morning.

Knitted Kalevala by Jenna Kostet

What does knitted folk poetry look like? How can a sweater be both a garment and a story?

Knitted Kalevala by Jenna Kostet includes 18 knitting patterns – sweaters, cardigans and accessories – inspired by Kalevala. Considered a national epic in Finland, Kalevala contains old poems full of Baltic-Finnic mythology, ancient symbols, mythical creatures and nature.
